EUROPEAN, DAG TYPE FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS, CA. 1800
Description :
This is a European, possibly English, Flintlock Blunderbuss made in the style of a Dag. A Dag was a very short weapon in the style of a musket used primarily for defense. For all intents and purposes it was a large pistol. They were quite popular with Coachmen to defend their charges from brigands and thieves. Their smooth bored barrels with belled muzzles were generally loaded with shot pellets for maximum effect. This one probably dates to about 1800. The round face lock is an oft used English style, but is unmarked. This gun is in good condition. The iron barrel and lock show a pewter color with some darker mottling. The bore is dark and rough. The brass furniture has a nice bronze patina. The stock is a good walnut brown. There is a crack on the left side running through the side plate flat. There is a chunk of wood missing on the right side behind the front of the lock. There is an old repair to the trigger guard and the ramrod is only about half length. These are interesting little guns that always draw attention.
