This is an original, Sharps Model 1853 slant breech carbine of .52 caliber. It is a very early production gun with brass mountings. This is the model Sharps that was acquired by John Brown, the fiery abolitionist, and used in his failed attack on the national armory at Harper's Ferry. This carbine is of the same period, but falls just outside the range of the carbines he used. This carbine is in very good to fine condition. The finish is mostly gone, leaving a silvery pewter patina with a few dark spots overall on the steel parts. The brass furniture is a golden brass. The bore is very fine, with deep, sharp rifling. The wood has a few dings and scars from long years of use. The mechanics are excellent. The saddle ring has been removed from the bar on the left side of the gun and the thin plate cover for the pellet primer assembly is missing. This is a solid example of a scarce gun.
