Item No.: 5619 Price : $9,250.00
Item : JAMES WINNER EARLY VIRGINIA NCO SWORD + SCABBARD
Description :
34 3/4 inches overall with a straight single edged 29 3/4 inch blade. Blade has a single narrow fuller that runs 3/4 of it's length. Blade is very fine. Never sharpened with only some slightly discolored age spots. Would clean to near mint! Blade is signed length ways at the right ricasso "WINNER". Dark brown iron guard and pommel and back strap. Black leather guard wrap and single strand iron wire wrap. Excellent black leather scabbard with iron drag and throat with oval frog button on the throat. Overall condition of the sword and scabbard is outstanding. James Winner was a Richmond, VA. sword and gunsmith. He began in Richmond in 1803 forging sword hilts and blades. He made the blade for the sword presented to Lt. Presley N. O'Bannon in 1806. Winner joined Abraham Nippes and John Steinman in Philadelphia where they had a musket contract in 1808 and delivered 3,900 by the Autumn of 1812. Winner also had a six month contract in June 1810 to provide horseman's swords but did not fulfill the contract due to intemperance. He returned to Virginia by 1814 where he worked at the Virginia Arms Manufactory as a sword cutler. This sword is almost an exact copy of the Starr Model 1813 NCO sword. I would date it between 1813 and 1815. There are only five Winner swords known and of the five this is the only NCO sword known.
