Item No.: 5507 Price : SOLD
Item : 1863 DATED CONFEDERATE FAYETTEVILLE RIFLE
Description :
.58 Caliber percussion Confederate Military Rifle. Type III with no bayonet lug. Produced at Fayetteville, North Carolina on Rifle Machinery captured from the Harpers Ferry Arsenal in 1861. 33 Inch barrel is a smooth mixture of dove an pium brown patina. Two leaf rear sight. Bore is dirty but may clean. The rifling appears strong. Good strong proofs at the left breech. The barrel is lightly pitted from the rear of the back sight to the breech. The only trace of a barrel date is a very light "8". Fine plum lock with sharp markings, "Fayetteville" to the front of the lock and "Eagle/CSA" in the middle. Rear of the lock is dated, "1863". Brass trigger guard, butt plate, bands and stock cap are all a deep mustard patina. The iron sling swivels have been removed. Fine mechanics with just a little burn out behind the hammer. Very good oil finished stock with a commensurate amount of combat wear with the metal. Left flat has the outline of a large oval cartouche. Butt plate tang marked "CSA" in tiny letters. Ramrod is a brass tipped period replacement. Handsome rifle.
