"FREMONT AFFAIR" HALL-NORTH US MODEL 1843 PERCUSSION CARBINE

.58 Caliber Rifled, Breechloading US Cavalry Long Arm. Simeon North Manufactured and dated "1849" on the breechblock. Barrel, breechblock and furniture are all a brightened steel color. Fine markings. Stock has certainly seen service but is still in very good condition. Complete with sling bar and ring and button tipped ram rod. Good bore, excellent mechanics. General John C. Fremont and others bought these obsolete, smooth bore carbines at the beginning of the Civil War for $3.50 each, had them rifled for peanuts and sold them to Fremont's command for $22.00 each. This was a contributing factor (along with he was a lousy General) to Fremont's release from The Union Army. Yep, Fremont was gone by late 62' but his guns soldiered on! Very nice carbine with an interesting history.
