VERY FINE CIVIL WAR US MODEL 1860 CAVALRY OFFICERS SABER AND SCABBARD BY W. H. HORSTMANN & SONS

Description :

37 Inches overall with a brilliant 31 inch lightly curved blade. Blade is engraved on the left ricasso, "W.H./Horstmann/$& Sons/Philadelphia" There is a 6 inch etched panel showing a spread winged US Eagle in front of a sunburst in the center. There is a Solingen "Kings Head" proof at the very guard on the right ricasso as well. Left ricasso is stamped, "6" with "Iron Proof" lengthwise on the blade. The center panel is a gold washed "Old English" "US" with fancy scroll adornments. Fine gilt brass hilt with raised acanthus leaf decorations on the pommel and tines of the guard. I believe the grip is made of gutta percha because they has a couple of tiny chips out of them and it doesn't appear to be wood. Tiny bright gilt wire wrap. Old red woolen sword knot with large tassle. Fine German made iron scabbard with the typical double return decor on the drag. Beautiful Officers Saber.
