WHITNEY US MODEL 1798 CONTRACT FLINTLOCK MUSKET

.69 Caliber Smoothbore US Martial Flintlock Musket. 43 Inch barrel with large "O" at the breech for the inspector, Noble Orr. Type III with the rounded base on the trigger guard. Barrel and lock have been lightly cleaned to bright. Slight salt and peppering towards the breech of the barrel. Fine original flint lock with "U.States" in an arc behind the hammer and a swan-like Eagle in the center above, "New Haven". Top jay and jaw screw appear to be museum quality replacements. Bands and ram rod have been lightly cleaned but trigger guard is apparently untouched. Retains both sling swivels and the original button tipped ram rod. Fine stock has been hand rubbed with oil for twoo hundred plus years and looks like fine old furniture. Beautiful large round cartouche reads "US/Orr". The "Orr" is within a banner below the cursive cartouche. Small amount of wood replaced right behind the hammer. this is so well done it's easy to miss. Very handsome and one of the very First US Martial Long Arms.
