German Imported Foot Officers Sword and Scabbard. 35 Inches overall with a bright, military decorated 29 inch blade. Fine openwork floral decorated guard. Reddish brown leather grips with 100% double twist wire wrap. Sword is in fine condition, Black saddle leather scabbard with decorative gilt brass furniture. Throat bears the presentation, "Presented By/Philanthropic Lodge/No. 15 I.O. of O.F./to/Lieut G.H.Book". The reverse reads, "Promoted Captain/82nd Regt of P.V. May 18th, 1862/Warwick Court House Apr. 5 1862/Williamsburg, May 5th ditto/Fair Oaks ditto 31st ditto/Malvern Hill July 1st ditto/Turkey Bend/Charles City Cross Roads". George H. Book was commissioned a Lieutenant in the 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry July 23, 1861. Promoted Captain, 8/20/1861. He was discharged 11/9/1862 and joined the 59th PA. Inf. July 1st, 1863, He was mustered out of that regiment two months later and took up a commission as an acting Ensign, U.S.N. in December of 1864. This accounts for the Naval Knots being added to the mounts on his Infantry Officers Sword. He was released from service at his own request in 1866. This was a man who saw a heck of a lot of the Civil War and deserves to be researched. Considerable records come with the sword.
