Description :
.71 Caliber Rifle Imported from Austria during The War Between the States. Started life as a tube lock but was converted by the Austrians for export. George Hoydecker sold 6,000 of these arms to the US during the War. Brass mounted with heavy triggerguard having a backward semi-finger loop. Brass double stock cap, bands and buttplate. Grislyn style flip up front sight. Smooth barrel and lock. Lock dated, "846". Small Austrian eagle to the rear of the hammer. Fine mechanics and bore. Retains both original sling swivels and heavy cup shaped ram rod and spring clip for sword bayonet. This rifle is sometimes called a Garibaldi Rifle but that is mistaken identity. The Garibaldi was more often the M1849. This model has a Delvigne chamber at the breech whereas the M1849 had the standard flat breech plug. Fine origiinal stock with a circle cartouche at the left flat.
