Item No.: 10277 Price : $1,975.00
Item : PATTERN 1856 NO.2 "BAR ON BAND" SHORT RIFLE BY GREENER, W/ SABER BAYONET
Description :
This is an original, Commercial, British Pattern 1856 No.2 "Bar on Band" Short Rifle manufactured by W.W. Greener of Birmingham, England. The shorter rifle was intended for Rifle Regiments and for sergeants in all Infantry Regiments. Initially, the Pattern 1856 Rifle had a bayonet lug brazed to the barrel to allow the use of the newly adopted Pattern 1856 Saber Bayonet. Concerns were voiced about the strength of the lug as well as possible heat damage to the barrel, itself, during the brazing process. The solution was placing the lug on the front barrel band. This entailed stocking the rifle to within an inch of the muzzle so the band and lug would be in the correct location. A cross pin was installed to stabilize the band and keep it from shifting. The Pattern 1856 Rifle No.2 was adopted in 1858. It is commonly referred to as the "Bar on Band" Rifle. The Confederacy is known to have purchased a number of these rifles, but this rifle has no markings to suggest Confederate usage. The rifle is in fine condition with an overall smooth, dark brown patina. Traces of case color are visible on the tang and lock. The lock has faded to a gray and brown patina. The rifle has excellent mechanics with a smooth action. The bore is very fine to excellent. There are a few tiny speckles near the muzzle where a tampion was probably used. 99.9% of the bore is bright and shiny with sharp rifling. The varnished stock is very good with the usual scattering of small dings and scratches from use. Included is an original Pattern 1856 Saber Bayonet made by Charles Reeves and Company of Birmingham, England. It is in fine condition with an overall smooth brown patina. The pressed leather grips are very fine. The patina of the bayonet matches the rifle well and when combined the two make for an impressive display. This is a very nice example of a scarce rifle.
