EUROPEAN PERCUSSION CAPE GUN, RIFLE/SHOTGUN, .44/12 GA., CA. 1850

Description :
|
Here is an original, Percussion Cape Gun probably of European manufacture. A Cape Gun is a combination gun with a large bore, rifled barrel and smooth-bored shotgun barrel in a side-by-side configuration. This gave a hunter more versatility in the bush where different types of game might be encountered. These guns became quite popular in South Africa, hence the name. This Cape Gun is in good condition with an overall dark brown patina. The rifle barrel is on the right and is about .44 caliber. The left barrel is a 12-gauge shotgun. The barrels are 34" long and are Damascus with the pattern still visible in good light. The bores are dark and rusty, and I see no rifling in the .44 barrel. The locks work correctly. This is a single trigger gun, and it fires whichever lock is cocked. If they are both cocked, they both fire. The hammer screws are replaced and both hammers have some wiggle. The stock is in good condition with a few scratches and dings. The stock furniture is iron and has a dark brown patina. The wrist is checkered, and this is worn almost smooth from handling. This gun probably dates to the 1850's when the wilds of Africa were still very wild. Stock no. xxx
